The effort to eliminate San Diego State University’s Aztec Warrior mascot took a major step forward Tuesday night.
The University Senate voted 52-15 in favor of a resolution to retire the mascot and references to spears, the school’s newspaper, The Daily Aztec, reported. A task force will also be formed to review the use of the Aztecs name.
The newly-passed resolution will now head to the desk of SDSU Interim President Sally Roush for a decision.
Earlier this year, the school’s Associated Student Council rejected a resolution that would have phased out the Aztec mascot.
Students at the university have criticized the mascot in the past because some find it offensive and call it cultural appropriation.
